The Tough Question

G-man asked me yesterday the question that I dread all year long....

What do I want for my Birthday and Mother's Day?

Why do I dread this?  Because the answer is....I have no idea.

In the past, my birthday and Mother's Day have been less than stellar.  This year is going to be touch and go.  I have a family member who is terminally ill, and it is just a matter of time.  At this rate, there is a good chance that the funeral could actually end up ON my birthday.  Of course, if that happens...anything we were going to do for my birthday will be postponed.

However, if my parents don't at least tell me Happy Birthday, I will be miffed.

But back to "what do I want."  This is such a loaded question.  I have a problem with stuff for ME.  For the house....no problem.  I have one thing in mind, but it really is more of something I have to do myself, and since my parents usually give me money....I had planned on using that money to pick out my item.

But G-man....he needs more concrete items.  Like....here is the exact link to what I want.

There are things that I would like, but they really aren't for ME.  Books (that G-man will read also)...while I love them, I am having a hard time concentrating on it, so right now, that isn't what I would like.  Jewelry....nothing I really want (or at least not now....future stuff....but not now).  Clothes?  Meh.  I am not happy with my body, so no matter what I put on, I hate it.

I am not a big soap/lotion girl.  No one to do a "spa" day with.  And if I say I would like a day to myself, that typically turns into a disaster.

So far, I came up with a suncatcher for my car, and a gazing ball for the garden.

Help me think....I am not trying to sound all "give me, give me" here.  But unless I come up with something, he is left to his own thoughts....and trust me....from past experience....that is a recipe for disappointment (even though I really don't have a right to be disappointed).

From what you "know" of me....what do you think?

  1. Well, I am not good at this either and I NEVER celebrate Mother's Day (a growing up thing).

So, how about a blingy new cell phone case, shoes - comfie or girlie or both, hair cut and style - no need to be with someone, a hair dryer/straightner/curling iron/etc that isn't working quite so well (but you cannot live without), gardening gloves, or a lounge chair to go along with that gazing ball!

Sometimes, it is ok if it isn't JUST for you. My husband loves to get tools and no, we don't use them, but we certainly benefit from them. As long as you are OK with it, it is perfectly fine.

  2. It is hard to think of stuff we want for ourselves sometimes.. You enjoy gardening correct? Are there any gardening items you'd like? New clothes you need? I tell my husband NOT to buy me anything for Mothers day as its "Mothers Day", not wife's day! lol! I prefer my kids to just be extra sweet, help around the house a little more & a few handmade cards & I'm happy!!

    1. Yeah, Mother's Day should be about the kids and me....but that isn't what has typically happened. It was only in the past year or two that it was even acknowledged in any manner.

But I already said what I want to do that day: go get flowers and plant, then Pirate movie and pizza in the afternoon.

  3. I usually have the kids go w/my husband to pick out flowers for the front porch and for the large flower pots I keep on my patio. They pick out the flowers and plant them for me - lovely!

  4. My birthday was last week and my husband told me to go buy myself something. See the problem with that is I am cheap! I will buy stuff for the kids and my husband, but for myself...I actually truly struggle. I wait until my husband tells me I NEED to get my hair done. It physically pains me to spend the $140 it costs. Clothes shopping is the same. I avoid it because it depresses me. I cannot justify spending retail prices...and then if I do, trying on clothes to find out the size I think I am is too small....well that sends me into a funk. So I avoid. Now buying things for the house, I could do that all day long. I love primitives, so I could spend all day in an antique store. But the mall...forget it.

Lastly, I am solely responsible for doing our finances. I can't spend money that I know next week might be needed for the vet or something. So....if not for my parents, I would get nothing at all. C'est la vie!

Hope you have a great birthday. I think we are the same age(37?). Getting old!! :)

    1. Happy Belated Birthday! Yes...I will be 37. *knock knock* *who's there?* *40!!!!!*

Yep, I do the finances, and I have a hard time putting money aside for this kind of stuff.

I am so much better buying stuff for the house.

    1. Nah. I like chocolate, but if it disappeared from Earth, I would be ok.

  6. How about a babysitter for the kids and and a nice dinner out and then somewhere with live music for drinks or go see a play etc? Tell him you want to go on a date! have a glass of wine and some dessert, tell him all you want is a card with beautiful words...

    1. No way. Way too much money. What you just described would run several hundred dollars.

Plus, a date should be because you love each other and want to spend time together. I don't want him thinking date=birthday. Then I would only get one date a year.

Wait....I do only get one date a year!

Plus, we have a wedding in 3 weeks...that will be our big night out.

  7. I am similar to you. People ask me what I want for my birthday, etc and I can never tell them at that precise moment because either I just don't know or I can't remember LOL So, I keep a wish list going at Amazon at all times and add stuff to it that I really would like to receive and if people ask me what I'd like I say, "Amazon gift card please!" So far, it has been the most successful solution for me and the gift givers seem to equally love it because (a) I buy what I want and, of course, show the gift card giver what I bought and (b) it's fast and easy for the usually very busy gift giver to do because all they have to do is go online for 5 minutes. They don't have to trawl the shops if they don't have time/don't want to. LOL
    Works for me.

  8. A gift certificate to a book store, or a several fast food places. That way when you are wiped out you can just stop and get a meal. I would love that.

  9. I asked for a few mini cupcakes from my favorite shop (never get them for myself - too $ & indulgent :-) & for my husband to cook dinner. I also ask him to try to help me find time where I can sneak out of the house for a run or quick trip to the gym. (This is not just a Mother's Day thing - it's an ongoing thing we work on together. Finding time for each of us to have a few ours to ourselves each week.)

Time to myself is priceless in my house (and yours too, I'm sure).

  10. I think giftcards, although some people dislike how non-personal they are, are a good idea for someone who is always spending on others. That way, they're sort of forced to go to only that store. Then again, Amazon can sell books as well as they can sell kitchen stuff, but it's a start. I personally had always had an issue with something that I "want", so I've learned to find and pick an item that I know is very affordable, and that actually I want but wont get myself (like a scarf). Lastly... psh, come on, girl! Where's that self esteem? It starts inside your head before it shows up in the mirror!

  11. I get a hanging flower basket every year for mothers day (picked out by the kids) and a gift card to a garden center for my birthday.
Works for me every year :)

  12. Remember how a few weeks ago you posted pics of dresses for a wedding? You only picked one right? Let him get you the other one :) You liked them both a lot.

If not, why not get on Etsy? Type in words of your favorite things and see what comes up. Type in your favorite color or your favorite hobby. Type in flowers garden whatever. That's my favorite way to find gems.

  13. I know you said you aren't reading much, but there is a blogger named Jenny Lawson who is absolutely hysterically funny. She just published a book, Let's Pretend This Never Happened, and it shot up to number 1 on the NY Times Bestseller list in less than two weeks. I got it and will be rereading it shortly.

Other than that, anything to do with hobbies you like - even if it's a gift card. I'm really into cross stitching, so I have a wish list on there that I can email to my husband. I also will take a gift card to Amazon because you can now get ANYTHING at Amazon.

Do you like to watch movies? We're expanding our DVD collection because the stuff available for streaming really stinks.

  14. With how hectic your daily life is I say go for a spa day by yourself. I recently did one (Groupon) and I went by myself & I loved it. I figure I talk all day everyday, at work, at home, on the phone, plus emailing, and texting, etc. so I could relax and enjoy my massage and facial without having to say more than yes or no. It was perfect and quiet which isn't something I get alot of so now I want to go again..alone! :-)

  15. I second the spa day alone, for the same reasons that Jesort415 said!
