Closing out the holidays

Merry belated Christmas!  Hope everyone had a beautiful holiday.

Ours was low key, as usual.  The kids finished the semester on the 21st, and will be on break until Jan 4.  Coincidentally, I am also on vacation  (without pay...sigh) as is G-man.  We haven't done much so far, but plan on seeing a movie later this week.

Christmas Eve is always full of family traditions....new jammies for the kids, decorating sugar cookies, reindeer dust.  Dinner was spaghetti and meatballs.  We always watch A Christmas Story.

Christmas day was quiet.  We opened gifts, had breakfast.  Most of the day was uneventful.  We had a lovely roast beef for dinner, and tiramisu for dessert.  G-man got a text from his mom...he tried to call her, and his brother.  Neither answered.

My mom called mid day.....to cancel for the next day.  No Happy Holidays, or Happy Hanukkah or anything.  Just an excuse why it wasn't a good time.  The real reason is they failed to plan for the dinner they invited us to, 3 weeks ago (I spoke to them 3 times this week and they didn't even realize that the grocery store would be closed on Sunday).  Also failed to get anything for the kids.  So we will just make up an excuse.  Typical.    She called back 10 minutes later to tell me a distant aunt isn't doing well and will probably not make it.  I have seen this person maybe 2x in 20 years and have zero relationship with.  But I am expected to be hysterical upset.  Mom was mad that I wasn't.

G-man and I attempted to get some Christmas lights  (trying to move toward LED) on clearance yesterday at Walmart....they were pretty picked over by the time we were there.  Only short strands left.

Today will probably be low key as well....G-man wants to go to a large outdoorsy store....about 30 min away.  Bye....have fun.  We probably have enough leftovers for dinner tonight  (especially since we weren't supposed to have dinner at home last night....).  If not, we can make a sandwich.  Not gonna stress about it.

My project for vacation is to clean up our office.  It has become the dumping ground.  I really need a file cabinet, as we got rid of ours when we moved (it was rusted, dented, and warped).  Also, I want to see if there is anything we can just purge.  In my ideal world, we can just use the closet for storage.  But since we lost our attic and basement in the move....stuff has to go somewhere.  Alot of the stuff in there is memory stuff.  However, this spring we will be getting rid of some outdoor stuff we brought with us and should have sold off before we moved.  Oh well.

New Years.. ..at home....snack foods.....movie marathon.  Quiet.  We like quiet.

How about you?

  1. My office too seems to be the Bermuda triangle of debris. so much gets put in there and never looked at again. Good luck with your decluttering. Tiramisu sounds delicious!

    1. Maybe if they left their bed once in awhile, it would be easier....

  4. Quiet. I like it too. I protect my quiet fiercely. We haven't even pretended to want to spend holidays with anybody else for many, many years, and I am so happy about that. Even so, Christmas seems to go in the blink of an eye.
Sorry your parents let you down. Maybe it's time to have no expectations?
Best wishes for the New Year.

    1. They didn't let me down. That would imply I wanted to see them or I was looking forward to it. It is annoying to play the game with them....they pretend to care....I attempt to help them.....then they crap on everything. I keep getting dragged into the game because when I don't play, I still get shit on.

  5. I haven't written about Christmas yet on my blog but it was lovely and quiet. My mom was ill with the flu so we didn't have her with us and she's still recovering so we'll end up with a "second Christmas" at some point over the next week or so. Glad you were able to have a quiet time. Wishing you well as 2016 ends and 2017 moves forward.

  8. I'm so sad you've stopped posting. I've read your whole blog from the start and have followed along with car trials and tribulations, moves, school dances etc. I'm just starting out (no kids yet) myself but love following along and rooting for your fam!
