It tastes funny

We have lived in our house for almost 11 years, and have had no problem drinking the tap water.  But the water has developed this funky taste.  I am hoping it is just because it is summer and the pipes are warmer (I know that the water isn't nearly as cold).

But it is getting to the point where I don't want to drink it.  I tried adding ice, but that made it worse.  We even dumped all the ice and cleaned the ice maker.  It just tastes yucky.

I have a pitcher in the fridge with water.  That is slightly better tasting.  I am guessing whatever little particles have settled or something.  But it still has a funky taste.  I am almost at the point of buying a Brita filter or something.  I don't want to get bottled water.  But I also know that I am not drinking enough water in general because of the taste.

Anyone out there have any thoughts?

  1. You can pick up a Brita pitcher at Wal-Mart, they are inexpensive. We use one, and it really does make the water taste better. :)

  2. Some water wells in older parts of major cities are in need of repair. This can cause water although safe to have an unpleasant taste. Try a britta picture if this does not work, you can buy those huge drinking bottles and refill them at not a very high cost.

  3. Without a doubt, i'd buy a BRITA system... water isn't "optional", and if it's tasting 'off' i'd whatever to give it the clean taste again. I'd also call the city water dept. just to be sure everything was ok...

  4. I work for a water company. I would give them a call and see if they have had any other complaints about the taste of the water. Otherwise, a brita filter would be your best bet, don't even get me started on bottled water. it's essentially tap water in a plastic bottle at 10,000000 times the cost.

  5. When we moved in to our current rental we tried to drink this water but it was/is disgusting. I was pregnant and thristy all the time. We finally found out it's because our pipes are rusted/corroded so we can't drink the water. Coming from NY I am used to drinking tap water too but now we have to buy water. I hate that it also makes our tubs and sinks discolored.

  6. Does your water come from a water tower? If it is being painted or having maintain acne, they might have shut it down. This has been our case for the past 90 days. Call you towns water department to see if they know the cause.

  7. I've never been one to but bottled water. In fact I've always kind of made fun of people for wasting the money. I just moved and have huge nasty particals in my water. I finally broke down and bought a case of bottles and a few huge 2 1/2 gallon jugs. Water is expensive! I need to look into different filters and see what I'm going to do.

  8. I would certainly start with the brita pitcher... don't forget to check online to see if they have any coupons that you can print for one :)

  9. Back in the Caribbean, drinking tap water was just unthinkable, so I never really did get into it. Even after living in the US for these many years, we still refill gallons of water at the stores instead of drinking off the tab. We really should buy a filter, but all the ones we've tried give out a 'funny' taste, and perception wise, it still feels like tap water, which we'd rather avoid.
