Per the weather report last night....we are likely to take a direct hit from Hurricane Irene. I realize that the storm may change course and it is still a few days away. However, last night they had 10 different computer models, and 8 of them had the hurricane hit us in one manner, shape, or form. And the most likely course will hit dead on....right down the middle of the state.....where I live.
They are comparing it to Hurricane Gloria back in the mid 80's. I remember that....we didn't have power for a few days. But the funniest story from that storm....was my mom getting all panicked. Made us fill the bathtub with water and put blankets in the bathroom (only room in the house without a window). She made chicken for dinner, and it just finished when the power went out. So we sat in the bathroom and ate chicken. *shaking my head*
I am not on of those "oh my gosh, this is the end of the world!!!" storm people. However, I ain't stoopid either. Extra water, fresh batteries....not a bad idea. Stuff for the kids to do if the power goes out....VERY important. G-man will take the kids to the library on Friday and let Sassy check out as many books as she wants.....and she has a brand new 504 piece puzzle, so she is set. Bossy.....that one will be tougher. I see lots of Uno and Connect 4 in our future. And lots of whining. I told G-man that we can spend the whole storm scrubbing and cleaning....he was less than thrilled.
The biggest snafu that this storm will cause.....it is the Kids' birthday on Sunday, when we are going to be in the thick of it. I am baking their cakes today, just in case, and will freeze them for a few days. They can thaw and I can frost, and we will still have b-day cake. They both wanted something grilled for dinner, and G-man is ok doing it in the storm (again, *shaking head*). So that part is ok. But being stuck in the house, possibly without power, on your birthday.....ick.
We have ways around Bossy's feeding pump, if we lose power. It has an extended battery life, so it should be fine. On the slight chance that it too dies, we can hand syringe feed him. No worries.
So my focus in the next two days will be storm preparation, and dealing with school PTA drama. One literal storm....and one contrived one! Anyone else in storm country, and preparing for a wild weekend???
Since I'm in a gulf coast state, we get our share of hurricanes --- although they've usually weakened to tropical storms by the time they get this far inland. Even those aren't fun to ride out. Years ago, we lost power for four days during Ivan. And I'm 4 hours inland! Batteries, water and activities are the way to go. Princess spent hours playing with a craft set she had previously had no interest in! Fortunately, we were able to stay with a friend after the storm went through until our power came back. Good luck! Stay safe! Hopefully Ms. Irene will weaken before she comes on land!
ReplyDeleteI am feeling for you! Hurricanes are no fun, being in Houston, we have our fair share. You are right though, water, batteries, propane (if the grill is gas) and activities. It is definitely quality family time in the aftermath.

Yes propane! G-man and I talked about that at midnight last night when we were both awake and couldn't sleep. That is on his "to do" list tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI hope you stay safe! And the only thing wild in my weekend is that my youngest friend is finally turning 21, so all of us older folk (I'm completely joking since I'm only 22 haha) are going out! Hopefully I don't spend too much money.

ReplyDeleteI am not in storm country, instead I am in earthquake country. I do not have the benefit of a warning, but we prepare for the inevitable "big: one. I used to live on the East coast and went through hurricanes (New Jersey) as a kid. We lost trees, but no real damage.

ReplyDeleteHang in there and make it fun. Tell the kids that the pioneers lived without power and come up with different ways to do things. Hope a miracle happens and it blows back out to sea! Stay safe.
