  2. Congrats to G-Man! In terms of percentage, how much more will he be making?

    1. It is actually a 9% decrease because the cost of living/locality pay is lower there. It balances out when you add back in the stuff that is less expensive there....like property taxes, gas, transportation costs, oil.....

My salary will be an unknown until I get a new job.

  3. When does he start? I guess you have to make decisions as to whether you move with him....

    1. Also, I think you might end up saving more money than you think. I don't know where in CT you live, but I looked at Hartford vs. Charlotte, and the cost of living calculator at bankrate shows 21% less. So a 9% lower salary might be quite a bit more advantageous.

    2. The date will be worked out...but he has 90 days from when his orders are cut...which will put him about Dec 1 (the orders will probably be cut next week...today's email is the offer). If we can sell our house and buy a new one in that time frame, then we will move as a family. If the house doesn't sell...the kids and I will remain in CT until it does...with the knowledge that it could be next spring.

    3. We are currently just south of Hartford. His base salary stays the same (that is the gov't way), but the locality pay will be lower. We figure once the dust settles we will have a much better handle on it. We won't be paying $337 a month for oil....but we will have a gas bill....so we will come out ahead, but we don't know by how much.

There is so much that goes into this. Because we are paying for the move, we will backslide temporarily (until we get our escrow money back, tax return where we will claim the move, etc). But we knew all of this going into it.

Ultimately, this position puts him on a better career ladder, with a good chance for a raise in about a year.

  4. Congrats on the offer.
Now get going on putting that house up for sale.
Too bad this didn't happen a month or two ago because people w/kids want to move them into new school districts before school starts....maybe there are some stragglers though moving up into CT. ;-)

  5. And another thought I had.....don't be too quick to jump into buying a house in NC. I'd rent something for a year until you get a real feel for WHERE you want to set down roots in that part of NC. It will keep you from buying and then regretting that you didn't take more time to shop around.
Your perspective on the town will likely change a lot from when you are new to the area to once you are a seasoned resident. Besides, if you are going to get a job in NC, you might want to wait a bit see where that ends up being in regard to where you want to live.

Your heating bill will be a lot better but remember, you will need a/c down there. Trust me....I KNOW! lolz

    1. If the kids were younger, I would probably be more open to renting. But I don't want to rent and start them in school...and then buy elsewhere and have to move schools again. They are going into 7th grade, and we really want them to get established. Renting isn't off the table....but particularly if we stay in CT through 7th grade.....I will not have them start a middle school for 8th grade, and then move to an area that would put them in a different high school than where they would have gone.

Oh, I know about AC! The electric bill will go up when the ac is on, and down in the winter when we are using gas. But we also know that a newer house is going to be way more energy efficient than our 100+ yr old windows.!

    2. I'm with Sluggy on this one. THINK about renting until you have your footing. High school districts are generally much larger than middle school ones because the size is bigger. But having said that, since a gazillion middle schools feed into a high school, it is mostly new faces on the first day of ninth grade anyway. Unlikely that they will be in classes with a bunch of kids they know regardless of where they went to middle school. Just don't want to see you make a rash decision and regret it later.

    3. It isn't completely off the table, but I have to say that I know my kids...and having to move, and move again....isn't going to go well. Additionally, we are going to take a huge tax hit by renting, and then if something happens and we aren't ready to buy yet and we have to leave a rental...this is all so so bad.

I have to have faith that the research we have done will lead us to the best decision.

  8. Just curious.... Can you live without your salary? Are you going to move even if you don't have a new job lined up?

    1. My gut feeling says NO, we need 2 incomes. But if I don't have a job lined up, I will temp, work at the grocery store....whatever it takes to bring something in. And yes, this move is happening even if I don't have a job. Our salary is going to go down, but if I am still in CT, I will have to pay CT bills, but on a NC salary. So the longer I am in CT, the more of a backslide I will take.

  12. HURRAY! That's awesome! Now let the actual planning begin! I too was going to suggest renting so you didnt have to scram to get a place so quickly and add to the stress, but you're not fond of the idea. Hope the house sells fast.

  13. Really happy for you. Congrats!

  14. Congratulations! I've been checking every day to see if you had heard anything or not yet. I can't think of a family that deserves it more after everything you have been through. Things are definitely a lot cheaper in the south. I live in Fayetteville which is about two hours away from Charlotte. I couldn't believe how low gas prices were compared to Chicago when I moved here three years ago, and property taxes, and etc. Charlotte also has an Ikea store that people I know drive hours to get to. :) Pour yourself a glass of sweet tea and welcome to the South!

    1. Thank you! G-man and I grew up in VA, so moving back to the south is like "going home."

Sweet tea....definitely a SOUTHERN thing! LOL

    2. Where did y'all grow up in VA? I'm from the Hampton Roads area plus I lived in Charlottesville for a year when first married.

    3. I grew up in Northern VA....Fairfax County. G-man grew up in outside of Fredericksburg (hour north of Richmond), and then I went to college in Fredericksburg.

But I went to ODU for my freshman year of college. :)
