Medical stuff

So, I have a little secret.  Before I tell you....it really isn't a big deal.  Promise.

I have to have surgery in about 2 weeks.  I have known about the surgery for a few months, and all things being equal, I have known that this would happen eventually. Since I was 18, I have had dermoid tumors.  Or more specifically, the first one was found when I was 18.  These type of growths are typically benign.  They tend to grow slowly, but sometimes they go into hyperdrive, and can grow very large very fast.  Typically, once you remove these growths, they are gone for good.

But alas, I am not typical!

I have lost count how many I have had.  Currently I have 3.  One is smack in the middle of my ovary, and it is very small.  It has been there for years, and everyone feels that unless it is causing a problem, let's just leave that one alone.  The other 2 are on the surface.  One is about the size of a large pea, and the other is about the size of a golf ball....this one has hair in it.  YUM.  The largest one I have had was the size of a baseball.

The larger one is in danger of "dropping" and causing everything to twist.  That is painful.  It happened once before.  So, might as well just lop it off and keep on trucking.

I have had to go in for "a rotor rooter" every few years for the past 12 years.  They remove what they can get to (as I said, some of them are in the middle, so unless they start causing pain, we are leaving them).  They grow back.  Repeat.  And usually while they are in there they check for polyps (I have had a few of those) and anything else interesting.  Clean it all out and I am good to go for a few more years.

Yeah...time for a rotor rooter.  It is done laproscopically, so I am in and out the same day.  Day 1 you feel icky.  Day 2 you feel better, and by Day 3 you are fine.

Anyway, no idea what the final cost will be.  Doctor, hospital charges, anesthesiology.  Insurance will pick up most of it.  Depending on how it is coded will depend on the final charges.  I am guessing our portion will be about $500, based on previous times.

I will be out of work for 2 days (because of course my doctor doesn't have operating hours on Friday).  I will have to go through the surgery "alone."  My surgery is scheduled for 7:45am, so I will probably have to be there about 6:00-6:15am.  G-man will drop me off, take the kids to camp for 8:30am, and come back.  I will probably be in recovery by the time he gets there.

I also have the tendency to have a rare reaction to anesthesia.  I was told that it usually happens to "little old men with enlarged prostates."  I can't pee after.  I have ended up in the emergency room twice to have a catheter.  The last time they got a Super Big Gulp amount of pee.  Like it was 55 oz....seriously.  So that is something to look out for.  Not fun.

I have chosen to not tell my parents.  They will make it about them, so why bother.

Anyway...just oversharing today!!!

  1. Good luck and I a sorry you have to go alone. I don't suppose you have any close friends that would go with you? For some people, I know that is asking a lot, but for others it is par for the course in a friendship. I am lucky I have friends that I could ask and they would be willing to go with me, as I would also do for them.

    1. I really don't have anyone to go with me. I will be ok. This isn't the first time I have been alone.

    1. Other than the pee thing....it really isn't bad. Last surgery I had (in 2008), the doctor gave me something that seemed to help. So I will ask for that again.

  6. good luck, my reaction to the anesthetic is to vomit constantly until it's out of my system. So not sure which one I prefer, not peeing or vomiting constantly???

Must say I prefer Canada, as we don't have to pay anything, unless it is cosmetic surgery.

    1. Not a fan of vomit. Ick.

I asked them at what point most people feel like they need to urinate, and they told me when there is about 8 oz in your bladder. So when I had 55 oz...it was PAINFUL.

  7. Aw, how awful. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery! Maybe since the not peeing thing has happened before, someone will figure a way around it.
