To Yard Sale or Not to Yard Sale

I have alot of little things....things that don't sell well on Craigslist, but in person, an impulse buyer might say....HEY!!!  I need that!

I have a TON of kids clothes.  Over the years I have sold alot, but I still have a ton.  I probably should try consignment, but I am sort of scared of it.  Don't ask.  I have books and toys and misc stuff.  In total....I have the makings of a yard sale!!

But yard sales are alot of work.  Part of me says...what if I put in all these hours and make $50?  It wouldn't be worth it.  I could donate it...and yeah, I get the tax write off...but I kind of want the cash.  I have tried selling on Craigslist, and have done alright, but I think alot of my stuff is not what sells on Craigslist.

So....what do I do?  Thoughts, oh bloggy friends?

  1. I was in the same predicament as you, but in the end I decided to have the yard sale last weekend. We made $175 which is better than all the stuff that we had sitting around the house, and then I donated the rest. I know it was a lot of work, but to me it was worth it. We probably would have done better, but it rained on Sunday so that didn't help. But to me in the end getting the stuff out of the house was great! The money was nice too!

  2. This is a hard one. I have never done well on yards sales. I do not want to work for days and make $50.00. Maybe I don't do it right. But if you have a lot of kids clothes you may make some money. But having it gone will be a relief also.

  3. We are having a garage sale this weekend and I been looking around the house all week looking for stuff. I think I can net 300 to 400, the key is to sell very cheap. Most items I have will not be over 1.00 and 80% of it will be clothes... our sale is community and advertised on Craigslist so it brings in a lot of people.

Yes have a yard sale and get rid of stuff you don't need...

  4. I had a yard sale last fall and got over $400, which was fantastic, because we needed a new microwave. I think it was worth it, but I did work on it for a couple weeks. Slowly pricing things and making some signs.

  5. If you can time it the same as a neighbor it helps. We have a neighbourhood one and the people come in droves. Saves on advertising and brings in more traffic.

If you only make $50 you have at least made more living space.

Having some popcorn bags for $1 each and a lemonade/drink stand adds up too. Men that get dragged out to garage sales are always hungry!

  6. Every other year or so, I have a sale and say "why did I do all this work, I'm never doing it again..." I donate clothes to our local thrift store, but some of the other stuff I'd rather get some cash for. So, I always do it again. I take my time, marking a few a day, and usually can make around $100. The key is selling cheap.

  7. Just to clear out the space is incentive to me! We are having a community sale this week as well. I am going through all my clothes and misc stuff.

  8. I go through this, so far I haven't had a sale, just donating stuff at the minute as I want to get it out the door and don't want to spend all that time for possibly very little return.

  9. I'd recommend trying the yard sale. I live in a condo so it's not really an option but if we could, I definitely would. You never know, it could go better than expected. I'd just end up donating what doesn't sell.

  10. We are leaning towards the yard sale on June 18. That gives us a month to get our stuff in order.

  11. Well over here in the UK we have 'car-boot' sales, is that the same as a yard sale ? Designated field, people turn up with their cars loaded with stuff, pasting tables and pitch up their stall. We are doing one this weekend. I will be so glad to get rid of this 'stuff'.
