Another Special Day

Today is Bossy and Sassy's 8th birthday!!!

Their birthday tends to be bittersweet.  My water broke with Bossy 2.5 weeks earlier, and no one thought we would even get close to a point where they would be viable.  But we made it 18 days, and they were born over 4 months premature.  The weighed 1 pound, 5.5 oz, and 1 pound 3 oz, respectively.  They are the smallest and youngest surviving twins in our state.

At the time of their birth, we were given less than a 10 percent chance of their survival.  We had to sign papers before they were actually born to resuscitate them, blood transfusions (did you know there is only about 8 teaspoons of blood in their body at that age????), transport.  Lots of decisions to make in a very short period of time.

They are 3.5 hours apart.  Bossy is the big brother (although Sassy is actually taller now!).  Bossy was born at 9:56 am, and they were waiting and waiting and waiting for Sassy.  But true to her personality....she did it her own way and she came when she was good and ready.  And she was born breech, in her amniotic sac (G-man actually saw her in there)  She was born at 1:28pm.

It wasn't until that evening that I saw them for the first time.  They were hooked up to more machines and tubes than I would have ever thought possible for such a small baby.  And that was our introduction to parenting.

There is ALOT more to the story, but I won't bore you.  Today we celebrate their amazing journey towards being tweens.  We are just hanging out today.  Steak with pink in the middle for dinner.  Some friends are coming over later for cake and presents.

Happy Birthday to my amazing little fighters.  People didn't think you could do it.....but you showed them.  You both continue to surprise us everyday with your spirit and energy.  We are so fortunate that your baby souls chose us to be your parents.  We love you sooooo much!!!

  3. Happy Birthday to both of them (albeit I'm a few days late).

I hope they're doing great and it's as meaningful to them as I'm sure it is to you!

  4. @Car Coach - thanks! They are doing great, and while they don't quite get how sick they were when they were born....I am sure one day they will figure it out. :)
