Furlough

Gotta love it.

G-man received the e-mail yesterday stating that the federal budget has not been approved yet for the new fiscal year (Oct 1), and there is a resolution that has not been passed yet to keep things afloat for a little bit.  However, there is always a chance that at some point....a government shut down will happen.

For G-man, he is essential personnel.  No sitting at home for him.  He has to go to work.  He just won't get paid right away for it.  If he works, he has to get paid....it just may take months before we see it.  Isn't that just ducky....

Additionally....if there is a shut down....he can't use his annual leave (vacation time).  Time off is unpaid. Well, he has 130 hours of use or lose that needs to be used before the end of the year.  No idea what will happen to that.  PLUS, that would mean he wouldn't get paid for time he takes off to come home for the holidays.  Super duper.  In that case...will he still come home?  Probably not.

I asked him about his 5 days administrative leave that he gets when we move.  Not sure about that either.  That time doesn't come from his vacation leave...that comes from the office budget.  So again, if he came to help with the move....he may not get paid.  So possibly I will have to do the move on my own.  This is getting even better and better as I type it!

I know some of this is just over reaction.  None of this is settled.  But in my already raw state, the idea that we would be without pay (we have savings and EF, so it isn't like we have NOTHING.....and we would eventually get paid)....and trying to sell the house at a loss....and he may not be here for the holidays....or for a move....

It is pouring rain here (needed as we had a dry summer).  There is some house stuff I am trying to talk to the realtor about.  Tonight is our activity night, so lots of running today.

It is just too much today.  Too much.

  1. I've been in a situation where I've been beaten up repeatedly (financially) so I can commiserate. Hold your nose and hope you'll be past the garbage dumpster soon. Meaning, hopefully in a few months this will have all shaken out.

  3. I honestly think the time has come to do whatever has to be done to sell the house and move (be it a big loss, renting at the new location, etc). You need to be together. Can you use the balance of this money to pay of the retirement loan and immediately take out another one to cover a possible large loss? As for renting, your kids will be done with high school in a few years, so renting in your optimum school district until they graduate and then buying in your dream neighborhood later might be a good plan. I truly wish you the best and hope things settle down soon.

    1. The new loan was taken at the max that was offered (through credit union, max of 25k, and which includes G-man's car) so we could pay off the retirement loan (which is done), and allow us to take another loan if needed. However, there is a 60 day wait. No getting around that.

  4. It looks like a bill was passed to avoid the shutdown. Looks like you finally dodged a bullet. Thank goodness!

    1. It is just for now. There is always the threat of a shutdown until a budget is passed. But yes...for the moment, we are ok.

    1. We won't get enough rent to cover the mortgage. We would probably have to pay 300-400 a month. Not sure if that is an option.

All of our options suck...we just have to pick one.
