Pandora

*This is not a compensated post....just something I felt like writing about today.

When I am at work,  I spend alot of the day alone, or alone-ish (boss's office is at the opposite end of the office space, and he frequently closes the door when he is on the phone).  That makes for alot of quiet.  Some days I love the quiet....some days I need some noise.

Pandora is my go-to internet radio station.  I love being able to hone into the mood that I am in, and having music that fits that mood.  I would spend a fortune buying all of these songs on iTunes to create my own
"mix tapes."  (Raise your hand if you know what a mix tape is!!)  And half the time, I forget about a song until I hear it and then I think "I love this song!!"  Or I finally can find out who the artist is that sang the song.....I am TERRIBLE at identifying this on my own.   (When it comes to Classic Rock, G-man loves to tease me and ask me who sings something.....my standard answer is Led Zeppelin.  I am usually wrong.  :) )  And I have been introduced to artists that I have come to really enjoy that are not necessarily mainstream.

I have gotten pretty good at figuring out which of my stations I need to put in the shuffle to achieve the mood I am in.  I used to select too many different genres, and my music would be so random and have no flow to it.  I would go from Poison, to Michael Buble, to Frank Sinatra, to The Cure.  I have refined it now.

The last few days have been more mellow.  The other morning I had the BEST flow going.....and then my computer crashed (it is dying a slow, hard death).  My mojo was gone....while I liked the songs that played after that....it just didn't have the same groove as before.  Bummer.

If there are others around, I will typically turn off the music.  My taste in music can vary (see above), and I try not to subject others to the musical manifestation of my moods.  However, sometimes I just turn it down where it is not as noticeable outside of my immediate desk area (I don't have an "office"....my desk is out in a common area).....but the acoustics in my office are weird.....I can't hear it sitting at my desk, but if I go 20 feet away I can hear it (and others have done the experiment and agreed with this).

One day, I was in a MOOD.  I was there alone, so I cranked up some hard sounding music.  My boss walked in later and said "oh boy....." and walked away.  Hee hee.  They all can tell my mood as soon as the door opens.

One thing they all agree on....they hate when I am in the Broadway Showtune mood!

Do you listen to music when you are working?  If so, what do you listen to?

  1. At home and work(I work in two group homes) I always put on the instrumental channel on satellite. It is so mellow. A bunch of my coworkers do the same now. My husband calls it depressing elevator music but whatever. In my car I have Sirius XM and I primarily listen to The Message channel which is Christian music.

  2. I used to use Pandora all the time, then a couple of years ago I heard about iHeartRadio and switched over to that. It has the option of not only creating your own station, but listening to live radio or specially created stations. I usually start the day listening to the Dave Ramsey station. They play the previous days call in show on a loop. When I get to a point where I'm hearing something I've already heard, I switch to a station. I choose what I listen to based on my mood, just like you mentioned.

    1. I use I HEART Radio for some things. Talk shows mostly. I just wish they played the whole thing....seems like they only play part.

  3. My life is listening to music, for a living. So when I am now rehearsing or at work I like quiet.

  4. I love Pandora! Especially around the holidays! I don't have to keep fooling around with changing cds and can change stations as needed (ie festive for cookie making and decorating or mellow for the holiday dinner) Other than that, I'll use it when I'm doing a large dreaded task like cleaning out a closet or overhauling the kitchen pantry! =)

  6. never heard of this before. Like you it depends on what mood I am in as to what I like to listen too.

  7. The only time I listen to the radio is on my commute to and from work - have to say I really enjoy the "me" time being able to choose what station to listen to.

  8. II use youtube...I'll find a song and then go to it on youtube and they'll have a 50+ non-repeating song list off of it. Not sure who or how those playlists are created but I have enjoyed it recently since the office I work at blocked pandora a few years back.

The type of music i am listening to depends on the project I am working on but ranges from red hot chili peppers to a lot of EDM stuff (yes, I am aware I am too old for EDM)
