The Price of Irresponsibility

In the mail yesterday.....G-man got a $125 ticket for speeding.  Apparently on his way home from his mom's a few weeks ago, a camera caught him going 38 in a 25 (he was in DC).  So this lovely ticket, complete with a picture of his car, and a close up of his license plate arrive.

$125 is due by 4/7, and if received afterward....the fine doubles.

This is not the first ticket he has gotten.  I think this makes 3 in the past 2 years.  Plus a car accident.  I am not a happy camper.

However, I am not worried about the money.  I know where it is coming from.

See, we agreed that part of our overtime money was going to replenish his "boat" money (we drained that account when we got my car).  Next week I had planned on transferring $200 from the OT account to the Boat account.

Now....$125 will get transferred to our checking account to pay the fine, and $75 will go to the Boat.

Too bad...you screwed up....you get your play money taken away.

At least we had it.  It won't effect the budget at all.  I am just annoyed that THIS is what our hard earned money is paying for.  I may make him write the check out....let him pay for his mistake.

  1. Boo that a portion of the boat money will go to the speeding ticket. But glad that the OT money is there and your budget will not be affected. Good idea to have G-man write the ticket, it will definitely hurt.

  2. Yikes! I hate those photo tickets. Knock on wood neither I nor the Princess has gotten one. A co-worker got one a week ago. Technology sucks sometimes!

    1. I have never gotten one. Heck, the last speeding ticket I got was at least 12 years ago!!
And I have only gotten 2 in my life.

  3. Maybe Gman and my DS1 can get together to talk about speeding tickets :-) Consequences can be very hard.

  4. I've had more than my fair share of tickets! I think it's 8, best I can remember. 0:)

However, it's been years and years since I've gotten one and with the way gas prices are now, I can't afford to drive over the speed limit and lose out on that mileage.

You're right though, irresponsibility is costly in so many ways.

  5. My husband once got a $100 ticket for not wearing his seat belt, which he of course forgot about. By the time we got the notice that his license would be suspended if he didn't pay, the ticket had gone up to nearly $400 with interest, penalties and court fees so it could be worse.

  6. My hubs just got a speeding ticket of his own. They actually waived the fine for the ticket but $122 in court fees is due by April 3rd. Not the way I wanted to spend the extra overtime pay but oh well, what are you gonna do.

    2. Yikes, I will likely slaughtered on here...you women are a tough crowd today! I am a stay at home mom, so when hubby gets the odd ticket I have to factor in that he is on the road a whole lot more than I am and sometimes stuff happens. My guess is that your hubby was less than thrilled when he heard that he had been caught...everyone on here makes it sound like he is the scum of the earth for making a mistake. Oh, and it is not a 'Men' thing, I have had a ticket before and yeah, I'm female! Next time it could be you Mysti, making an accidental wrong turn, going through a last second red light, or going too fast when you think the speed limit was different. Not saying it's fun, not saying he hasn't deserved the ticket, but sheeesh, the comments on here in addition to your post make it sound like he was out beating small children. He screwed up, he is taking the $ out of his 'own' fund and life goes on. Don't have to rub salt in the wound... Have a great day everyone!

    3. I agree that sometimes stuff happens. But in our case....this is the 4th "stuff happens" in a short period of time. This is the FIRST time it is coming out of "his" money....it has always been me who had to cut the budget to make up for his mistake.

Yes, it could happen to me as well. But I try to be preventative so that these things don't happen.

It may have come across harsh...but in real life, it wasn't a huge blow out or anything. But here is the thing....the money will come out of his boat repair fund. Then the boat will need something, and he will want to fix it. Then he will want to charge it. And then we will go round and round because he will be upset when I say we aren't charging it.

My "men" comment wasn't about men getting tickets. It was about, in this case...my husband and Debt Hangover's husband...ending up using their overtime pay to pay for mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice to use overtime for something OVER the usual stuff...in a positive direction???

  7. Well at least he will have to pay out of his boat money, I would be taking out of the grocery budget or working harder. Or it would be my fault. Ay least now it is not my fault.

    1. I have spent YEARS finding ways to pay for his mistakes. This one, I am lucky enough....to let him have to "pay" for.

You do the crime, you pay the fine!

  8. thats the only way they learn. my husband can get free haircuts from my mom, but he gets lazy to call her up and schedule a time--he'd rather just go to the barber. so i finally said, if you ever pay for another haircut because you're too lazy to call my mom--then it's coming out of YOUR fun money because i do NOT want my money being spent on your laziness.
that solved the problem fast enough ; )

  9. Good for you for making it come out of HIS personal fun money.

If he has a boat fund, do you have a fund for something fun?

    1. I don't have a formal fund, but I have a budget line item for me. We keep talking that we both need an allowance....just for the fun stuff that we want to do, but don't necessarily want to run by the other one.

His *(^&*%&^%^& boat has been my nemesis since we met!

  10. HA, I have a boat of hubbies I would be happy to unload (I mean sell) what a waste of money!!! Glad you let him live another day!!

  11. I have been trying to talk G-man into selling his hunk of junk (I mean beloved water vessel), for years. At this point, it needs sooooooo much work. His argument is that it is paid for, and he wouldn't be able to purchase another one. Gee....isn't that a shame.

  12. Tickets suck, end of story... DC is FULL of those cameras. I've seen them snap other people and it makes me nervous. Glad that you dont have to borrow money from EF or other necessities and the money can, instead, come out of a funding of his. There, there, G-man! It happens to the best of us.
